According to a report on Polo Driver, Volkswagen is now offering an LPG-compatible variant of the Polo hatchback in Germany. The VW Polo BiFuel is fitted with a 1.4-litre 84bhp engine that can run on both petrol and LPG and the driver can switch between the two fuels with the push of a button even when the car is moving. In LPG mode, the Polo’s emissions are 10% lower compared to when it’s running in petrol mode.
While Volkswagen’s clean, green ‘BlueMotion’ technology might be too expensive for the Indian market – at least on a small hatchback like the Polo – we believe VW may well offer an LPG variant of the Polo in India. It shouldn’t be too hard for VW engineers to adapt the existing India-spec Polo’s 1.2-litre petrol engine to run on LPG, and with the significant cost savings that it entails, an LPG variant of the Polo could find many buyers here.
