Volkswagen has unveiled the most powerful, fastest-accelerating Golf it’s ever produced – the Golf R – at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Developed by Volkswagen Individual, the special projects wing of Volkswagen, the four-wheel-drive Golf R is fitted with a 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder turbocharged 270bhp petrol engine, mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox. This engine is actually lighter and more powerful than the 3.2-litre V6 in the earlier Golf R32!
The new Golf R can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. The car features lowered, stiffened suspension, uprated brakes (345mm discs at front, 310mm at the back), Xenon headlamps and LED running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inchers are optional), revised twin-stage ESP software, and sharper steering. VW will launch the Golf R in Europe by the end of this year and prices will be announced at that time.
