
When the Maruti Suzuki joint venture was set up in the mid-1980s, few would have imagined that someday, Maruti would be making more cars than Suzuki. And yet, it’s already happened – in 2009, Maruti produced 966,399 cars, while Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) produced 908,302 units.
Maruti Suzuki sold 836,893 units in India in 2009, and exported another 130,688 units. During this period, the Alto and Wagon R were Maruti’s bestsellers in India, while the A-Star (sold as Alto in markets other than India) did best in terms of exports.
Maruti Suzuki is now looking to expand capacity at its Manesar plant to 250,000 units per annum by 2012, for which it plans to invest Rs 1,700 crore
