Established in year 1927, Volvo is world's leading manufacturer and most global player of trucks, buses, cars, construction equipment, aero engines and engines for marine and industrial applications. The company has maintained a consistent focus in the transport and automotive vehicle industry. It has its production facilities in over 20 countries and sales all across the worldwide. Volvo is headquartered at Gothenburg, Sweden and the first car rolled out of the factory in Goteborg way back in 1927. The company was owned by Volvo AB until 1999 when Ford bought the controlling rights for Volvo. The Swedish auto giant is now placed under Ford's Premier Automotive Group and produces safe, reliable and premium luxury cars. Volvo has entered India with two of its most formidable offerings - an executive luxury sedan, the S80 and the XC90 SUV. It is the company belief that technologically aware India will make an ideal base for production and global sourcing. The company is one of the biggest producers of heavy commercial vehicles as their trucks are reputed for their performance, economy and are the flag bearers in their production activities in India. Major attention goes to the commercial transport sector and activities which are underway to introduce buses and construction equipment. The company inducted its manufacturing facility for heavy commercial vehicles in Hoskote, near Bangalore in June 1998.

Volvo S80

Volvo S80 Image The Volvo S80 is a sophisticated and stylish car in response to the competition in the upper premium segment. The S80 line is fitted with an impressive array of safety features including all-wheel brakes, a system for traction control, a collision warning system that includes pre-braking technology, cruise control that is radar adaptive, airbags in the front, and dual-chamber bags on the side. The active xenon headlights are designed to move with the curvature of the road. The interior of the new S80 speaks of quality throughout, with wood or metal accents, a quiet cabin, and ample amenities. Plenty of leg room is available in front and back, with supportive seats that are ensconced in supple fabric. Instruments are easy to read and intelligently placed. Cabin acoustics are good with low engine or road noise. Visibility is good with a few small blind spots. Standard on the new 2007 S80 is a powerful new audio system with 10 speaker concert hall sound. Among the safety features Volvo is renowned for are adaptive cruise control which varies your speed depending on the proximity of traffic ahead. The S80 introduces a feature that may give the driver advanced warning of a potential crash. Radar behind the grill of the S80 senses when it is advancing too rapidly upon a vehicle ahead and gives the driver a heads-up audible signal and a visual alert. In conjunction with this, the brake system automatically reacts to shorten your braking response time. There are three available engine configurations: a 4.4-liter V8 with AWD, a 3.2-liter six cylinder FWD, and a 3-liter turbocharged inline six with AWD generating 285 horsepower. In the S80's cabin, the dash includes gauges trimmed in metal with both analog and electronic displays. The center stack, in keeping with Volvo tradition, houses all the buttons to control the climate, audio, and safety features with clearly marked, easy to understand buttons. The soft leather and comfortable seats make the S80, like all Volvos, a leader in luxury. A new "Modern Wood" inlay is available and the knob on the gearshift is now covered in leather. Buyers who opt for the Climate Package can enjoy heated seats in the rear. The available Dynaudio Package adds premium, high-powered sound as well as headphone jacks and audio controls for backseat passengers.

Tried and tested in Indian conditions, it performs exceptionally well to The interior features such distinctively Volvo characteristics including first rate materials and an ergonomic style that house an endless list of comfort and convenience features that are situated in an exceptionally functional manner, yet somehow give the appearance of a sleek minimalist design. The one word most commonly associated with the Volvo name is 'safety', and the XC90 upholds that tradition very well. Rated as one of the safest SUV's for 2007 by the IIHS and the NHTSA, the XC90 utilizes available technology to help drivers avoid potential problems with safety features such as roll stability control, antilock brakes, traction control, and an advanced blind spot information system including cameras mounted in the side view mirrors that activate an indicator light when another vehicle is within the XC90's blind spots. Safety is also apparent in features that protect the driver and passengers should an accident occur and includes reinforced passenger compartments and a full series of airbags. In addition to its strong safety features, the XC90 is comfortable, and practical, and available in three trims in India. Volvo is currently importing its cars as completely built units (CBUs) and will gauge the sales of their premium models through its dealerships in India and could bring in more models in the near future.
