
| Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL), the largest automotive manufacturer of India was established in February 1981. The company started as a 50-50 joint venture (JV) between Suzuki of Japan and Maruti. The government of India held 18.28% stake until recently. This holding stake was sold off to the financial institutions in May, 2007. Suzuki has gradually increased its holding percentage to 54.2%. The first offering from Maruti, the Maruti 800, was the bestseller for a long time until its sibling, the Alto. Maruti sells over 500,000 cars annually in the domestic market, and exports close to 30,000 units to several countries. It is largely credited for having brought the automobile revolution to India. It is the market leader in India. On 17 September, 2007, Maruti Udyog was renamed to Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The company is headquartered in Gurgaon, near Delhi. Maruti has twelve car models available in India - Maruti 800, Maruti A-Star, Maruti Alto, Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Gypsy, Maruti Omni, Maruti Swift Dzire, Maruti Swift, Maruti SX4, Maruti Versa, Maruti Wagon R, and the Maruti Zen Estilo. The minimum priced model is the Maruti 800 priced at Rs 190,980 and the maximum priced model is the Maruti Grand Vitara priced at Rs 1,480,000. |
