Tata Sumo SE Plus BSII

The Sumo has grown today into a tried and tested highly successful multipurpose vehicle, with five variants to suit every need. Its powerful engine, rugged body and large cabin space offer a comfortable ride, and is ideally suited for long distance travel. It seems that the Sumo has been around for ages and has been given a few face lifts and touch-ups. It is not known for its good looks and Tata too has realised that too, but it is a rugged people-mover. If you want a good-looking version, try the Grande.

There were few changes made to the Sumo and nothing drastic that created a stir. Overall, it still looks boxy with a sturdy build. The Spacio and the Victa platforms that are on offer differ only in terms of load-carrying capacity and the grille. The Spacio is a 10-seater, and has a 3.0l engine that produces 68bhp at 2800rpm whereas the Victa with its many variants has a 2.0l engine pumping out 90bhp at 2800rpm. Both run on diesel and the ride quality is good and so is the handling but the considerable amount of body roll limits the handling. The interior space has been the strongest quality in the Sumo since its inception and the interiors have been revamped and standards have been upped a notch.

On the whole the Sumo Victa presents itself as a true lifestyle vehicle for the family. The new Sumo Victa is a fine blend of contemporary vehicle styling, design and technology. In the high-end version, the fascia gets chrome lipped, a new honeycomb grill, along with clear lens headlamps. A single piece colour contrast front bumper with integrated fog lamps and air dams adds to the frontal look. The modified styling extends to the clear lens turn indicator lamps, the flashy new graphics, the side cladding on the doors and to the new vertical tail lamps. On the exteriors, the add on's include a chrome inlaid spare wheel cover and a new body hugging rear bumper. A thoughtfully provided gas strut in the rear door makes light work of hauling the heavy unit open.
